There is no denying the impact Willie Nelson's songs have had on music and life in general. His "On The Road Again" lifestyle and love for the American farmer have inspired generations of people to follow their dreams and stand up for what they believe in.
I have often had the conversation with my father about what the top three Willie Nelson songs are and with a catalog like his you are bound to get as many different answers as people you ask. I would have to say. His way with words and melody, as well as his unique guitar style have touched me since I was a boy. Our conclusion has always been that you can't pin the top three songs down. In my opinion coming from a lyrical standpoint they are "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain", "Funny How Time Slips Away", and "There's Nothing I Can Do About It Now".
1. Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain
In Nelson's rendition of the Fred Rose ballad he sings of a love ones final goodbye and the longing for the day you "stroll hand in hand again, in the land that knows no parting". His voice aches as he croons this somber tune backed by that classic Willie Nelson guitar sound.
2. Funny How Time Slips Away
Rarely does a phrase enter my ears from a radio that is so truthful and can open up a myriad of different memories. The way he sings "Gee ain't it funny how time slips away" drives home the point that life is all too short and things are always changing.
3. There's Nothing I can Do About It Now
In this song he speaks of mistakes, regret, and the mentality that there is no use in dwelling over the past. "I could cry for the time I've wasted, but that's a waste of time and tears" says it all. He sings of acknowledging the mistakes that one has made and to use them as a part of who you are but not to dwell.
These are only three pieces of work from what some consider to be one of the best lyricists to ever grace us all with his ability. The conversation can go on for hours over which songs are the best. Whether it be "Have You Ever Seen The Rain", (which he recorded with his sister) or countless others he also always seems to pick the most touching songs to cover.
Whether you agree with me or not you can't deny that Willie Nelson is one of those artists who spans genres, generations, and cultures. His songs have been touching millions for decades.
