Good news. Now you can learn guitar from the comfort of your own home. Online guitar lessons are very popular.
There are countless channels on YouTube with seasoned guitar players willing to share their wisdom. There are free lessons as well as paid.
Usually the free lessons are not as quality as the paid but you can certainly find all of the lessons you need for free. It just takes some searching around.
Then there are paid programs that are usually for beginners. You can find lessons if you are more advanced and have been playing for months.
What should you look for in lessons? Of course you want the teachers to be not just good at playing but good at teaching. What I found is that lots of teachers are kind of boring and leave out some important concepts to grasp. This is really what I was looking for when starting out which was song lessons. But keep in mind you should not just skip the basics and go right to learning songs and how to read tabs.
You should start learning the base of all music which is the major chords. These are the basic sounds of any song you hear.
Be sure to learn all of the major and minor chords which include A through G. Learning about chord theory and scales will give you a better idea of where the notes are on guitar.
The best skills you can acquire as a guitar player include playing by ear. Ideally new guitar players want to be able to put a fairly difficult song on and play the notes to it.
This is hard to grasp. You need to start with the basics. And you should learn how to train your ear. There are online guitar programs that can really help you with this.
One of the guitar programs, Jamorama is a course that has a very helpful software called Guit-ear-it. It is a game that helps you get the sounds of each note and chord down just by hearing it.
Once you practice this over and over again your ears will become very powerful tools to learning new songs. Then there is reading music.
With guitar there are two ways of doing this. You can read tabs which is the easier way. Then there is sheet music. It is important to learn both. Usually guitar players just stick with learning tabs but that kind of limits yourself.
Be sure to find a guitar program that shows you how to read both tabs and sheet music.
Some guitar programs can be quite expensive as well. But think of it this way. If you took lessons from a teacher to learn the basics then you would be spending more money.
Learning from an advanced teacher is great later on but you should not pay $15 an hour to learn the major chords when you can learn online for free and even pay a fraction of that to get a lot more for your money.
