We all have our preferences when it comes to what music we like to listen to. This is a good thing because it means that whatever one wants at any particular time is there for the hearing.
It is truly impossible to live in today's society and not hear any music. So, listening to music is a part of our everyday life and it looks like it is going to remain so.
Planned Listening To Music
When you are able to choose what you listen to is mostly either when you are home, in the car or at a concert. Otherwise you pretty well listen to what it playing through whatever medium that might be.
If you are at home you have your own collection of music available. You also have the radio and television which can play music for you. Do you often sit down with a cup of tea or coffee and put on a record and listen to something you really enjoy hearing? This is one way I enjoy music enormously. But among my acquaintances whom I have asked about it there seems to be fewer and fewer people who listen in this way.
Of course you can listen in your car to whatever you desire. Also there is the iPod which can contain music for your pleasure.
You can even go to a concert and listen to music live. For me this is the most enjoyable of all forms of listening to music.
Involuntary Listening To Music
We are truly accosted with music in restaurants, elevators, stores and practically every public place.
If you go to the gym for your workout you are usually blasted with something that is supposed to fall into the category of music. It does make me do my workout as quickly as possible, but I am not sure that is the intent.
One of the newest places to hear music is in train stations and such public places. There seems to be the belief, and maybe it is even true, that playing classical music loudly at these places keeps young people and undesirables from congregating and possibly getting into mischief. Somehow I find it sad that music is used in this way, but if it keeps the peace I guess there is an argument for it.
Background Music
Being a professional musician I really would prefer to be able to go to a restaurant and not be forced to listen to their choice of music. It is very difficult for me to hear music and not listen to it. Consequently music in the background makes communication difficult for me. At home I never have music on unless I am actually listening to it. Never do I eat with background music. I love eating and like concentrating on that.
I realize that I am probably very much in the minority, but I think we are being abused by having so few places where we can be without being forced to listen to some sort of music. I would love for it to be something special.
Silence
One of my great pleasures is silence. Cleaning my ears out allows me to enjoy so much more the sound of music when it happens and falls on my ears which have been with silence for a while.
